Blacksmithing at The Folk Forest

Come and join Blacksmiths Iain Jones and David Southgate from Forge Four Blacksmithing for a taster session in Blacksmithing.

On this hour long taster session make your very own hooks or ornamental leaf to take away with you and learn the basics of blacksmithing.

There are two forges. Each anvil/forge will accommodate 2 participants – book on with a friend!

Knife & Axe Carving at The Folk Forest

Nadine works with greenwood and traditional hand tools, specialising in spoon/bowl carving and bespoke, handmade furniture. She is part of the Ecclesall woods craft team and her handmade furniture and carvings are made in a traditional way by hand with local timber.

Nadine will be offering 1 and a half hour taster sessions in carving with a knife and an axe

11.00 – 12.30 Carve a butter knife/letter opener

Learn to use an axe safely to create the shape of your carving and then learn a handful of knife grips to get you started in the skill of whittling.

1.30 – 3.00 Carve a spatula.

Clay Sculpture Workshop at The Folk Forest

Work with Sheffield ceramicist Anna-Mercedes Wear on this hour long workshop, to create your own animal sculpture from clay. There will be an option to have your piece taken away to be fired after the workshop.

Woodland Animals: Come and have a go at making a clay woodland animal, Foxes, Squirrels, Badgers and Rabbits. Anna will teach you the basic techniques of modelling your own woodland creature. Discover how to make a small clay sculpture.

Natural Cordage & Jewellery making at The Folk Forest

Jasper Prachek is a hedgelayer and local craftsman working with natural materials to create beautiful jewellery, barkcraft and woven products.

He harvests the bark and bast from the Elm and sweet chestnut tree in the spring and uses this to create hand made woven bags, bark pots, elm bast string and other individual products.

Join him on this one and half hour workshop and create your own beautiful hand made jewellery.

Pole Lathe Turning at The Folk Forest

Dave Jackson is a Sheffield based woodsman and greenwoodworker. Working in his field for over twenty years he specialises in crafts made from a traditional pole lathe and hand tools, such as a drawknife , axe and shavehorse. He combines his wood work with teaching his craft at Ecclesall woods craft courses.

Join Dave for an hour long 1 to 1 session on the pole lathe and create your own turned item to take away.

Jason will be offering two hour relief carving workshops a day.

Learn how to carve your initials, a flower, an emoji or a niche in wood
for yourself to take away.

Gypsy Rose Carving at The Folk Forest

Viv Scone is an arts and green woodwork practitioner and is based on the Ecclesall woods craft team in Sheffield, She will be offering workshops in carving these beautiful Gypsy flowers out of local Willow. Learn to use a knife safely and take away a beautiful hand carved flower made from local willow in this 45 minute workshop.

Any Children under 16 must be booked on with a paying adult attending the workshop.please wear suitable footware for using sharp tools.

Charcoal Burning Demonstration at The Folk Forest

Demonstration with James Hookway.

Charcoal can be made from any organic material. Traditionally charcoal is made from large sections of wood, but it can also be made from twigs and branches, agricultural or garden waste and even animal bones and waste! 

Come and watch the Hookway retort creating charcoal in front of your eyes and James Hookway will be on hand to answer any questions that you may have.

His local charcoal will be on sale, Try it and you will not go back to shop bought charcoal!
